VOYANT DEMONSTRATES SOFTWARE-DEFINED APPROACH TO STRENGTHEN ANTI-SUBMARINE WARFARE OPERATIONS

Voyant has successfully demonstrated how advanced software can unlock significantly greater capability from existing sonar systems as part of a UK Ministry of Defence’s Programme to strengthen anti-submarine warfare operations.

Working alongside the Ministry of Defence, the Royal Navy, Thales UK, and Mind Foundry, Voyant integrated its proprietary probabilistic tracking and particle-filter software with the Thales S2087 sonar system to improve the exploitation of acoustic sensor data, providing richer information for downstream AI-enabled Mind Foundry’s decision support system. This enables operators to build a clearer operational picture, maintain higher-confidence tracks and make faster, more informed decisions

Rather than replacing existing hardware, Voyant’s software integrates with deployed sensor systems to enhance the quality of information from existing sensors, strengthening detection performance, improving the tracking of weaker and more distant contacts, and increasing confidence in target classification. Voyant automates these tasks, reducing operator workload while delivering higher-confidence information to downstream decision-support applications.

The project demonstrated the value of combining UK sovereign software with operational expertise to rapidly evolve capability through spiral development. Continuous engagement between the Ministry of Defence, Royal Navy and industry partners ensured the technology matured in line with operational requirements while maintaining compatibility with existing defence systems.

James Norwood, Chief Executive Officer of Voyant, said: Modern sonar systems already collect more information than conventional processing techniques can fully exploit. Our software is designed to unlock the additional information, enabling operators to detect, track and understand underwater threats with greater confidence without the need to replace existing hardware.

Important projects like this demonstrate the power of collaboration between government, industry, and innovative small to medium-sized enterprises. By combining advanced sensing with AI-enabled decision support, we can deliver software-defined capability that strengthens operational effectiveness while reducing integration risk and accelerating future capability development.”

The development comes at a time of renewed strategic focus on undersea domain awareness, as global maritime activity increases. Robust Anti-Submarine Warfare capabilities are becoming critical to safeguarding national security, protecting critical infrastructure, and ensuring freedom of navigation.
