Challenge
The underwater environment remains one of the most complex battlespace domains. Challenging acoustic conditions, increasing background noise, fainter acoustic signatures from evolving submarine threats, and growing volumes of sensor data make it increasingly difficult for operators to detect, understand and respond to potential threats with confidence.
Voyant’s software integrates seamlessly with existing acoustic sensor architectures and is designed to unlock greater capability from existing sensors, without requiring hardware replacement or upgrade. It significantly improves the exploitation of existing data to boost effective detection range, tracking of weaker and more distant contacts, and target classification confidence.
Working alongside the UK Ministry of Defence, the Royal Navy, Thales and Mind Foundry, Voyant integrated its proprietary particle-filter software with the Thales S2087 sonar system to enhance its sensing systems and provide richer inputs for Mind Foundry’s NIGHTINGALE decision support.
Voyant automates manual tasks to reduce operator workload while delivering richer, higher-confidence information to downstream decision-support applications. This enables operators to build a clearer operational picture, maintain higher-confidence tracks and make faster, more informed decisions.
NIGHTINGALE is designed to facilitate human-machine teaming, providing near real-time classification of acoustic data by surfacing AI insights in explainable, digestible formats. By enabling operators to ‘see with sound’, it provides machine-speed decision support, reducing cognitive load, time to classification, and enhancing operational decision-making.
