Voyant > Decision Advantage > From the Bridge to the Boardroom: Why software will define the future of Defence

The UK’s new £298bn Defence Investment Plan (DIP) is a bold statement of intent. It recognises that the threats we face today – and those rapidly emerging – demand a defence posture built on speed, autonomy, software, and intelligent systems, not legacy processes and slow procurement cycles.

Investment in drones, autonomous platforms, AI‑enabled capability, digital infrastructure, and warfighting readiness shows a clear shift: defence is finally moving towards the reality of modern conflict.

My own journey began navigating Royal Navy warships, where readiness wasn’t theoretical – it was lived every day. You learned quickly that capability only matters if it’s reliable, adaptable, and available at the moment you need it. That mindset has shaped everything I do.

Today, as CEO of Voyant, we’re building the sensor and data fusion engines that makes autonomy operationally credible. Our mission is simple: turn autonomous platforms into deployable, dependable capability – at scale, at speed, and with absolute trust.

The DIP reflects exactly why this matters:

  • £5bn committed to drones and autonomous systems
  • A major uplift in warfighting readiness
  • Modernisation across land, sea, air, cyber, and space
  • A clear recognition that software is now the decisive factor in capability

This is encouraging – but let’s be honest: it’s only the start. The scale of transformation required across defence, industry, and digital infrastructure is enormous. We have momentum now, but there is a long way still to go.

At Voyant, we’re focused on delivering the autonomy, AI‑driven decision support, and software‑defined capability that modern forces need to stay ahead of rapidly evolving threats. Because geopolitical instability isn’t slowing down – and neither can we.

From the bridge to the boardroom, one thing has stayed constant for me: the mission matters. And today, that mission demands embracing autonomy, intelligent software, and rapid innovation to ensure the UK remains secure and competitive.

The world is changing quickly. Defence must change even faster. This plan sets the direction – now we need to deliver.
