One of the most rewarding aspects of my role as CEO of Voyant is the opportunity to see first-hand where the next generation of defence and security capability begins.

Technological advantage may ultimately be measured on frontline operations but many of the most significant advances start much earlier – in universities and research laboratories, and through collaborative partnerships that bring together academic excellence, industry expertise, and operational insight.

Having served on the frontline, I have long understood the importance of maintaining technological advantage. Success in defence has always relied on combining talented people, innovative thinking, and the ability to turn ideas into operational capability, and I have seen throughout my career how research and development can transform outcomes. Leading Voyant has given me an even deeper appreciation of the role universities play in shaping the future of defence and security.

From research to capability

Voyant is a product of precisely that environment. Spun out from the University of Liverpool, our technology is built on more than two decades of world-leading research and a belief that advanced technologies can help address some of the most complex challenges in defence and security.

Today, our work around innovative sensing and intelligence algorithms enables users to better detect, understand, and respond in uncertain and contested environments.

Operational insight matters

But research alone isn’t enough.

Equally important is the experience of those using the technology to ensure innovations remain relevant and effective. Operational feedback tells us what matters, where assumptions need to be challenged, and how technology must perform outside controlled conditions. This continuous feedback loop helps us refine our solutions and push the boundaries of technology to deliver the most advanced capabilities to those who need them most.

And increasingly speed matters.

The challenge for the UK is not simply whether we can generate world class innovation. We can. It is whether we can connect research, industry and operational need effectively enough to turn that innovation into deployable capability at a pace the environment demands.

This is why the recently announced Defence University Alliance is such a positive development. The University of Liverpool, as a founding member, has the potential to strengthen those connections, bringing academia, industry, and defence closer together, developing talent, and supporting promising technologies to transition rapidly from the laboratory to the field.

As someone who has served in uniform and now leads a technology company born from university research, I believe this connection will be fundamental to maintaining the UK’s innovation edge.

The future of defence technology will be built through partnership, collaboration, and continuous learning from those on the frontline. The understanding that innovation does not end with the breakthrough – and that advantage comes from getting it into the hands of people who need it at a speed to make a difference.
