First Bearings

Over the past 30 days, I’ve stepped into one of the most exciting and demanding chapters of my career: becoming CEO of Voyant. A spinout from the University of Liverpool, Voyant is built around the application of advanced algorithms, utilising particle filters, to push the boundaries of sensor capability and deliver next-generation sensor and data fusion engines.

Joining any organisation as CEO is daunting. Joining one whose heartbeat is high‑end software, deep technical research, and multi‑domain system integration adds another layer of intensity. You need to absorb the technology, understand the application space, and grasp the business’s challenges, opportunities, and priorities at pace.

I was fortunate. In the months leading up to my start date that I had the chance to get to know the Voyant team. They armed me with research papers, models, and late‑night reading that meant I didn’t walk through the door cold. Instead, I arrived with a foundation that enabled me to engage, ask the right questions, and begin shaping a view of where we can go next.

What stands out

What has struck me most about the team in these first weeks is the combination of intellectual depth and focus on solving operational challenges. Voyant isn’t just building clever algorithms – it’s turning that work into practical capability that can make a genuine difference for our defence and national security community. And that alignment between theory and application to real-world problems is what sets Voyant apart.

What leadership demands here

If these first 30 days have taught me anything, it’s that leadership in an organisation built on deep technical expertise requires equal parts curiosity, humility, and decisiveness. You must be willing to learn fast, challenge respectfully, and make calls even when you don’t have every piece of the puzzle.

The blog journey

I’ll be using this blog to share that journey – what I’m learning, what we’re building at Voyant, and how we’re shaping the future of sensing and decision advantage. I’ll also offer some reflections on the defence landscape  where the pace of change continues to accelerate,  from emerging threats to the rapid evolution of sensing, autonomy, and data‑driven decision‑making,  It’s an exciting time but one that also demands clarity of thought and a willingness to challenge assumptions. My aim is to contribute to that conversation openly and constructively.
